Why every host needs a written checklist

When you manage one property and clean it yourself, you know every corner by heart. But the moment you hand off cleaning to someone else — or add a second property — things start slipping through the cracks.

A written checklist is not about distrust. It is about consistency. It ensures that every guest gets the same experience, no matter who cleaned or how rushed the day was.

Kitchen

  • Wipe all countertops, backsplash, and stovetop
  • Clean inside microwave and oven (check for food residue)
  • Empty and wipe down the refrigerator
  • Run and empty the dishwasher
  • Replace dish soap, sponge, and hand towel
  • Check that all plates, glasses, and utensils are present and clean
  • Wipe cabinet fronts and handles
  • Take out trash and replace the bag

Bathroom

  • Scrub toilet inside and out, including the base
  • Clean shower/tub, including grout and glass doors
  • Wipe mirror, sink, and faucet (check for water spots)
  • Replace towels — bath towels, hand towels, and washcloths
  • Restock toiletries: soap, shampoo, conditioner, toilet paper
  • Empty trash and replace the bag
  • Check drain for hair buildup
  • Wipe light switches and door handles

Bedrooms

  • Strip and remake all beds with fresh linens
  • Check mattress protector for stains — replace if needed
  • Dust all surfaces: nightstands, lamps, headboard
  • Empty and wipe inside all drawers and closets
  • Check under the bed for forgotten items
  • Vacuum or mop floors, including corners and under furniture
  • Ensure all hangers are in the closet

Living areas

  • Vacuum or mop all floors
  • Wipe all surfaces: coffee table, TV stand, shelves
  • Clean TV screen and remote controls
  • Fluff and arrange cushions and throw pillows
  • Check for scuffs on walls and furniture
  • Ensure all lights and lamps are working
  • Dust blinds or clean window sills

General (every room)

  • Wipe all light switches and door handles
  • Check all windows are closed and locked
  • Replace any burned-out light bulbs
  • Test smoke detector and carbon monoxide alarm
  • Set thermostat to default temperature
  • Remove any personal items left by previous guest
  • Final walkthrough: stand in the doorway of each room and look with fresh eyes

Before you leave

  • Lock all doors and windows
  • Set out welcome amenities (if applicable)
  • Take a quick photo of each room for your records
  • Report any damage or maintenance issues immediately

Make it your own

This checklist is a starting point. Every property is different — you might need to add pool maintenance, outdoor furniture checks, or specific appliance instructions. The key is to write it down once, refine it over time, and make sure every cleaner has access to the same version.

A checklist that lives in your head is not a checklist. It is a liability.
